About the Book

Is the Bible only for believers, or do people who don't think there is a God also have something to learn from it? We no longer have to keep to the same path as the ancient writers did, but can we use their insights as 'stepping stones'; pointers to help us on our way? In this readable and innovative personal journey, the author considers whether the various kinds of literature and human experiences that the Bible contains can still help us find the best way to live, even in our more secular times. The map may no longer show us exactly where to go. But can we use it in a different way to help us create a new kind of 'humanist spirituality'? Rather than drawing attention to our religious differences, perhaps both believers and non-believers will each find some new truths that can emphasise our common humanity instead.

About the Author :
Ben Whitney is the son of a Baptist Minister and initially trained as a social worker. Following the sudden death of his father he decided to take a further postgraduate degree in Theology at Manchester University and the Northern Baptist College in the late 1970s. This was a truly eye-opening experience in which he first encountered an unconventional and radical theology, often considered a little too unconventional by traditional Baptist churches! Alongside an academic theology degree, he also spent time in a night shelter for homeless men and played an awful lot of snooker and table tennis with the best friend who crops up at the end of 'Finding the Way'. A pastoral ministry followed from which some of the material in 'Walking Without God' is drawn. But, like many people, he always found faith a struggle and despite publishing 'Through Darkened Glass' (Epworth), a little book on the Lord's Prayer, he decided that ministry was not for him. After a couple of years helping churches in the Lichfield Diocese to implement the ideas in the 'Faith in the City' Report, he decided to go back into social work, but in an educational context. Since then he has worked for over 20 years in two local authorities and published several books for teachers on child protection and attendance, drifting away from faith and any active church involvement. But early retirement in 2011 offered the opportunity to reflect again on some of the theological ideas from his past and to explore a new understanding of a 'humanist spirituality'; a search for values and meaning inspired by the Judao-Christian story, but without a belief in a supernatural God. 'Walking Without God' explores the big issues of human life - meaning, suffering; forgiveness, hope etc. and takes verses from the Psalms as the starting point. 'Finding the Way' is more of a personal response to the human Jesus, based on selected parables, and applying them to contemporary social and moral issues. His third humanist release 'Updating the Map' explores a 'humanist spirituality' within the Judao/Christian tradition. This book, again uses the extended metaphor of country walking. For those who cannot believe in a supernatural God, the Bible cannot give us all we need to live a more secular life to the full. Its 'map' no longer fits with what we see around us. Ben says 'I believe there are many people in our society who cannot believe in a God but who still want to engage with a personal spirituality. For me, this is a search within the Christian story, though others may start elsewhere. I also think that many of those who are still holding onto faith may find my journey interesting. Anyone is welcome to share in it, but they need an open mind and a willingness to explore new ideas. All three books would be best used by discussion groups as well as for personal reading'. He has two grown up children and a grandson; his daughter is an artist, photographer and blogger; his son is an academic philosopher, now training to be a primary school teacher. His partner is a teacher of Classics and she has three daughters of her own.
