About the Book

Where do you want to escape to? Being an adult means living in a world of forgotten dreams. Revisit the innocence and dreams of your childhood in this emotive, modern fairytale. Joy and her best friend, Lisa, live beside the beach on the wild and wonderful Norfolk coast. Joy loves her idyllic life and doesn't want it to change in any way. Lisa wants to see the world and is obsessed with society and fashion magazines, yearning for a celebrity lifestyle. Joy says that celebrities are fake, shallow people who care only for their own gain and wouldn't know real love if it slapped them in the face. In their eternal argument, who will win and what is it that Joy is hiding from Lisa? Can Joy ever escape from her past or will it always hold her prisoner, creating deep-rooted prejudices that blind her to the possibility of happiness in her future? She has pushed her secrets deep down inside her and is determined to be content with the present, but when she loses even that comfort of security, she would rather die of a broken heart than face the bleakness of her life. And then...a friend gave her a gentle lecture and a book and she began to see her life in a whole new perspective. She is told that true happiness is when you learn to like yourself and she isn't sure that she can do that, but at least she is willing to try. Follow Joy on her breath-taking journey of self-discovery in search of that elusive happiness that comes from within, leading her into that dreaded world of fashion and celebrity.

About the Author :
Award-winning fashion designer, Amanda Wakeley, has given her full permission for the fictional fashion designer to be based on her. Dawn and Sacha were thrilled to follow in the footsteps of the fictional characters as special guests at Amanda's show during London fashion week 2006. The show was sponsored by Aston Martin, where it was announced that Amanda will be creating a clothing range for the car company in 2007. Both Cheshire girls, Dawn and Amanda became friends when they were teenagers and both have their family roots still firmly set in the county. Best-selling author, Katie Flynn, who lives just over the border in Wales, also became a close friend of the teenage Dawn and was her inspiration and writing mentor. Like many residents of the border village of Farndon, Dawn's family live on both sides of the rive Dee and she was born in the nearby hospital of Wrexham in Wales. Dawn lived and worked in London as a make-up artist and model and later moved to another border area, Banbury, Oxfordshire - famous for its cross and a lady on a white horse - where several counties meet in the absolute middle of England. Dawn's daughter was born in Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds. Dawn's connection with the tragic story of Sophie is that when Sophie returned during her gap year to teach drama at the idyllic private girls school, near Banbury, where she had been a pupil, Dawn's daughter was four years old when Sophie, her teacher, died in a head on collision with a lorry, three days after she had passed her driving test - aged only 19 - on her short journey through the country lanes to the school. Dame Judi Dench became Patron of the youth theatre charity that Sophie had already created and Dawn is keen to sell as many books as possible before Christmas to raise money for this charity. There is an inevitable and emotive comparison in the novel between the lives of Sophie, aged 9 to 19 and the leading female character - aged 10 and a half to 21. When Dawn and her daughter left the world of London celebrities for a quiet life in Norfolk, they lived in a caravan beside the beach on the wild and wonderful Norfolk coast and this gave Dawn the inspiration for her novel - a reversal of her life. Her characters leave Norfolk to experience the world of fashion and celebrity in London.
