About the Book

This book is the result of 10 years of on-site, meticulous painting of individual living trees as well as their detailed parts. David More, a supremely gifted botanical artist, has contributed 330 more illustrations than the 2000 contained in the first edition. The main section of the book is devoted to almost 400 double-page spreads, which describe and illustrate more than 1800 species and cultivars of trees. The trees illustrated were selected because they are commonly cultivated in England and continental Europe; most are also to be found in American gardens, and some are indeed native to North America. Besides paintings of the trees' habits - both summer and winter for deciduous trees - there are detailed paintings of leaves or needles, bark, blossoms, fruit, nuts, or cones. This book is a must-have for any reader with an interest in trees, whether to grow them, identify them, or simply take pleasure in the minutely detailed and beautifully drawn artwork of David More.

About the Author :
John White is a recently retired tree expert who has devoted his life to the study and care of trees and woodlands. He lives in the UK.

Review :
A comprehensively illustrated encyclopedia of trees, shrubs, bamboos, climbers and conifers, including complete descriptions, botanical and common names, position and soil preferences & hardiness ratings. Wisley Bookshop 20020528 Nearly 800 pages describing and illustrating more than 1,000 species and varieties, most of which can be found in American gardens despite the book's British roots. But it's the illustrations that set it apart: paintings of entire trees as well as details of leaves, needles, barm, flowers and fruits. -- Denise Cowie Philadelphia Inquirer 20021122 This is a joyously squat, authoritative tome, about the size of a reference Bible, Apocrypha and all. -- Verlyn Klinkenborg New York Times Book Review 20021208 It wasn't difficult to choose a favorite [book]. All I had to do was take one look at the paintings by David More... They're enough to make a tree-lover swoon... His close-ups are achingly realistic, right down to the nibbles taken by insects. -- Kym Pokorny Oregonian 20021212 The book is a 'must have' for any reader with an interest in trees, whether to grow them, identify them or simply take pleasure in the beautifully detailed artwork of More. -- Suzanne Hively Cleveland Plain Dealer 20021121 More's paintings of trees, done on site over a decade, make this 800-page encyclopedia a standout. -- Carol Stocker Boston Globe 20021219 More and White have succeeded at creating a remarkable body of work.
