About the Book

The concept of membrane receptors as components that recognize extracellular ligands and translate their binding into appropriate intracellular responses has been central to pharmacology for more than a century. However, the last few years have seen developments at the molecular level, transforming the discipline of pharmacology. This study examines the latest developments in receptor structure, transmembrane signalling, second messenger generation and second messenger action. It provides access to each of these areas and gives an overview for the future drug manipulation of transmembrane signalling.

Table of Contents:
Structural determinants of ligand binding to Alpha and Beta adrenoceptors, J.W. Regan et al; molecular pharmacology of coined muscarinic receptors, N.J. Buckley; G-protein subtypes - structural identification and functional studies, A.M. Spiegel; roles of G-proteins in coupling of receptors to ionic channels, L.Birnbaumer et al; transmembrane signalling by G-proteins, P.Gierschik et al; G-protein dependent regulation of phospholipase C in turkey erythrocyte membranes, G.P. Downes et al; modulation of neuronal Ca currents by G-protein activation, A.C. Dolphin and R.H. Scott; G-proteins and cell growth signalling, J.Pouyssegur et al; regulation of adenylyl cyclase, A.Bar-Sinai et al; receptors regulating intracellular Ca, J.Meldolesi et al; inositol polyphosphates as intracellular second messengers, R.F. Irvine; receptor control of calcium transients, P.Cobbold et al; synthesis and biology of second messenger analogues, B.V.L.Potter.
