About the Book

Time of flight mass spectrometry identifies the elements of a compound by subjecting a sample of ions to a strong electrical field. Illuminating emerging analytical techniques in high-resolution mass spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry shows readers how to analyze unknown and emerging contaminants--such as antibiotics, steroids, analgesics--using advanced mass spectrometry techniques. The text combines theoretical discussion with concrete examples, making it suitable for analytical chemists, environmental chemists, organic chemists, medicinal chemists, university research chemists, and graduate and post-doctorate students.

Table of Contents:
Part I: Principles and Theoretical Aspects of Accurate Mass. Chapter 1: Accurate Mass Measurements with Orthogonal Axis Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (John C. Fjeldsted). Chapter 2: The Mass Defect, Isotope Clusters, and Accurate Mass for Elemental Determination (E. Michael Thurman and Imma Ferrer). Part II: Tools for Unknown Identification using Accurate Mass. Chapter 3: Ion Compostions Determined with Increasing Simplicity (Andrew H. Grange and G. Wayne Sovocool). Chapter 4: Use and Existence of Accurate Mass Databases and Elemental Composition Tools for Target and Non-Target Analyses (Imma Ferrer and E. Michael Thurman). Chapter 5: Use of UPLC-(Q)-TOF-MS for Rapid Screening of Organic Micropollutants in Water (Felix Hernandez, Juan V. Sancho and Maria Ibanez). Chapter 6: The Use of Accurate Mass, Isotope Ratios and MS/MS for the Analysis of PPCPs in Water (Michael C. Zumwalt). Part III: Applications of LC/TOF-MS for the identification of small molecules. Chapter 7: Applications of LC/TOF-MS in the Environmental Field: When Did it Start and Where is it Going? (Imma Ferrer and E. Michael Thurman). Chapter 8: Liquid Chromatography and Ambient Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry for the Analysis of Genuine and Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals (Facundo M. Fern ndez, Christina Y. Hampton, Leonard Nyadong, Arti Navare, Mark Kwasnik). Chapter 9: Quantitative Analysis of Veterinary Drug Residues by Sub 2 ?m Particulate High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Columns and Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-TOF)(Anton Kaufmann). David Sparkman, Patrick R. Jones, Matthew Curtis). Chapter 14: Comparison of LC/TOF-MS and LC/MS-MS for the Analysis of 100 Pesticides in Food: Finding the "Crossover Point" (E. Michael Thurman, Imma Ferrer, Paul A. Zavitsanos and Jerry A. Zweigenbaum).

About the Author :
Imma Ferrer, PHD, has twelve years of hands-on experience in ion trap, triple quadrupole, and time-of-flight mass spectrometry of small molecules as applied to environmental and pharmaceutical chemistry. She is currently a Professional Research Associate of the Center for Environmental Mass Spectrometry at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. She is the author of the book Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, MS/MS and Time-of-Flight MS: Analysis of Emerging Contaminants. She is also the author of numerous highly cited papers on the analysis of pesticides and pharmaceuticals by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. E. Michael Thurman, PHD, is a highly cited scientist in environmental chemistry and an Emeritus Scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He is currently Director of the Center for Environmental Mass Spectrometry at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, Colorado. His bibliography consists of more than 200 publications in environmental chemistry, including more than 100 journal articles, twenty proceedings and chapters, and eighty U.S. Geological Survey publications. Dr. Thurman has published five books dedicated to the chemical analysis of pesticides and natural products, sample preparation, and mass spectrometry.

Review :
"This book is an important contribution to the growing field of accurate mass measurement by TOF MS for analysis of "small molecules". Generally, it can be recommended for all scientists working on small molecule analysis by mass spectrometry." (Anal Bioanal Chem, 2010) "Throughout the book, theoretical discussions are illustrated with concrete examples that show readers how to perform their own accurate analyses. By arming chemists with the principles, tools, and applications of LC/TOF mass spectrometry, this book enables them to apply the most advanced techniques to analyse unknown and emerging contaminants with the greatest level of accuracy possible." (Chemistry Journals, 11 April 2011)" "This book is an important contribution to the growing field of accurate mass measurement by TOF MS for analysis of "small molecules". Generally, it can be recommended for all scientists working on small molecule analysis by mass spectrometry." (Zentralblatt Math, 2010) "This book is an important contribution to the growing field of accurate mass measurement by TOF MS for analysis of "small molecules. Generally, it can be recommended for all scientists working on small molecule analysis by mass spectrometry." ( Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry , Jan - June 2010)
