About the Book

One of the contributors to this book is the inventor of bond graphs, Henry M. Paynter, who sketches a picture of the prehistory of bond graphs. The book is dedicated to him, because without his insight, knowledge and challenging attitude, bond graphs, and consequently this book, would not exist. Most of the pioneers in this research area, as well as young researchers, have also submitted papers. Engineers reading this book should get the flavour of what the "bond graph way of thinking" can do for them: not as some alternative or even competitive method but as a knowledge representation which allows the integration and extension of existing methods and approaches.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Historical, Cultural and Mythical Perspectives. An Epistemic Prehistory of Bond Graphs (H.M. Paynter). My Vision of Bond Graph History and Culture in the World (J.U. Thoma). Bond Graphs: A Control Engineering Perspective (P.E. Wellstead). Bond Graphs: Some Myths and Facts (P.C. Breedveld). Section 2: Bond Graph Theory. Geometrical Analysis of Isenergic Junction Structures (N. Hogan). Displaying Kirchhoff's Invariants in Simple Junction Structures (C. Bidard). Determination of the Input Power in Terms of Output Variables using Bond Graph (S. Scavarda, M. Amara, E. Richard). Section 3: Bond Graph Applications. A Simple Bond Graph Vehicle Handling Model including Roll Effects (D. Karnopp). Mechatronics and Bond Graphs - Industrial Impacts and Prospectives in the Automobile Industry (A. Raulf). Bond Graph Modelling, Simulation and Experimentation of a Master-Slave Robotic System (P. Huynh, A. Yazman). Power Electronics and Electrical Machines Modelling Using Bond Graphs (J.P. Ducreux et al.). Bond-Graph Modelling of a Low-Vacuum Control Valve (P.C. Breedveld). Section 4: Theory in Terms of Bond Graphs. Application of Bond Graphs to Distributed Parameter Systems (D.L. Margolis). Bond Graphs for the Structural Dynamic Decoupling Problem: A Case Study (B.M. Maschke). Modelling of Flexible Multibody Dynamics and a Symbolic Generation Scheme (H. Yoshimura, H. Nakano, T. Kawase). The Dynamics of Electrical LC-Circuits in the Light of Bond Graphs (B.M. Maschke, A.J. van der Schaft, P.C. Breedveld). Poles and Zeros of Multivariable Linear Systems: A Bond Graph Approach (C. Sueur, G. Dauphin-Tanguy). A Dynamic Bond Graph Model of the Fluid Mechanical Interaction in Spool Valve Control Orifices (W. Borutzky). Section 5: Computer Aids and Knowledge Engineering. A Concise History of ENPORT (R.C. Rosenberg). Object-Oriented Bond-Graph / Block-Diagram Modelling (J.D. Reid, R.C. Rosenberg). Multibond-Graph Version of the CAMAS Modelling and Simulation Environment (J.F. Broenink, J. Bekkink, P.C. Breedveld). ARCHER: A Program for CAM and Analysis (A. Azmani, G. Dauphin-Tanguy). Automated Mechatronic Systems Modeling using MAX (J. van Dijk et al.). An Environment for Industrial Process Design using Bond Graph Modelling (L.S.P.S. Smith, P.J. Gawthrop). A Model of the Modelling Process (T.J.A. De Vries, P.C. Breedveld). Bond Graphs for Causal Explanations (J.L. Top). Integration of Qualitative Reasoning and Bond Graphs: An Engineering Approach (S. Xia, D.A. Linkens, S. Bennett).
