About the Book

The important role of psychological research in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI) is becoming more and more recognized. The principles of how to design a user-oriented system cannot be worked out without the knowledge of how users work with systems. Presented in this book is recent research on the role of mental models in HCI research. The papers are an edited collection of those presented at the 6th interdisciplinary workshop on Informatics and Psychology in Scharding, Austria, May 1987, and they cover different approaches such as: - human knowledge representation - action regulation and plan recognition - simulation of interaction - formal methods of describing mental models - system design and mental models - learning and mental models.

Table of Contents:
Theory. Limited theories as a framework for human-computer interaction (T.R.G. Green). Mental models and the control of action in complex environments (J. Rasmussen). Mental Models and Psychology. On the dynamics of mental models (Y. Waern). Problem solving research and human-computer interaction (U. Gumm, H. Hagendorf). Styles, skills and strategies: cognitive variability and its implications for the role of mental models in HCI (G.R.J. Hockey). Empirical Investigations. Experimental reconstruction and simulation of mental models (D. Ackermann, T. Greutmann). Mental models and strategies in the control of a complex system (O.J. Ringelband, R.H. Kluwe). An experimental study on mental models in database search (L. Linde, M. Bergstrom). Empirical study of the reference interview in bibliographic online retrieval (M. Wettler, A. Glockner-Rist). Learning. The role of the user model in learning as an internally and externally directed activity (P. Briggs). On the relationship between a user's self-teaching and his knowledge (R. Schindler, A. Schuster). Interdisciplinary Design . Toward adaptive human-computer interfaces (E. Wetzenstein-Ollenschlager, H. Wandke). Designing for the mental model: an interdisciplinary approach to the definition of a user interface for electronic mail systems (G.C.van der Veer, S. Guest, P. Haselager, P. Innocent, E. McDaid, L. Oesterreicher, M.J. Tauber, U. Vos, Y. Waern). GNEWS: Results of an experiment on the reinforcement of a mental communication model by a visual interface (M.L. Begeman). Mental concepts and direct manipulation: drafting a direct manipulation query language (G. Rohr). Mental models and the design of user manuals (W. Rupietta). Formal Modelling . User modelling for a text-editor coach (M.C. Desmarais, L. Giroux, S. Larochelle). A grammar-based approach to unifying task-oriented and system-oriented interface descriptions (H.U. Hoppe). Indexes.
