About the Book

Cryo-EM Methods and Management provides a detailed introduction to the latest advances of cryo-EM, from technical innovations to the logistical challenges of maintaining a modern cryo-EM facility. The book consists of four parts, beginning with an overview of cryo-EM. It then moves on to discuss Cryo-EM workflows, with chapters focusing on sample handling and preparation, data collection and hardware, and data procession and visualization. The third part centers on aspects of cryo-EM infrastructure and community building, considering facility set-up and management, monitoring facility performance, instrumentation monitoring , data sharing and standards, and training and development standards. The book then closes with a section looking towards future prospects for cryo-EM. This is an ideal reference for cryo-EM facility and lab managers, providing guidance to the often-overlooked aspect of facility building and management. Additionally researchers working with cryo-EM across molecular biology, structural biology, cell biology and biochemistry will benefit from this book.

Table of Contents:
Part I: Overview 1. An overview of cryo-EM Part II: Cryo-EM workflows 2. Cryo-EM sample handling and preparation 3. Data collection and hardware 4. Data processing and visualization pipelines Part III: Infrastructure and community building 5. Facilities, user base and centralized resources 6. Monitoring and proactive maintenance 7. Data sharing and standards 8. Training and development Part IV : Concluding Perspectives 9. Prospective advances in cryo-EM

About the Author :
Dr. Edward T. Eng is a senior scientist at the Simons Electron Microscopy Center, and the manager of the National Center of CryoEM Access and Training, at New York Structural Biology Center. Dr. Eng has been a Research Topic Editor at Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences, Structural Biology and a Special Issue Editor at the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. He is the author or co-author of over 100 scientific works in various journals and his major research interest is application of electron microscopy (EM) to biomedical research by providing expertise and resources for understanding both molecular and cellular structures. Jake D. Johnston is a Ph.D. student at Columbia University's Physiology department. He is working in the de Marco lab at the Simons Electron Microscopy Center where his main interests are involved with method development for high-resolution in-situ cryo-electron tomography. At SEMC, he gained expertise on cryo-ET sample preparation, data collection, and processing. Before pursuing a doctoral degree, he obtained his master’s in biochemistry under Dr. Stephan Sprang at the University of Montana, and in collaboration with Dr. Wah Chiu’s group at Stanford University where his work focused on elucidated the structure of G-protein complexes. Dr. Alex de Marco is the Director at the Simons Electron Microscopy Center and is a distinguished electron microscopist known for innovative research in the field of cryo-electron tomography. He earned his PhD from EMBL and Heidelberg University (Germany) specializing in cryo-electron tomography and image processing. His work resulted in the first structural description of the viral maturation in HIV-1 and the first sub-nm structure ever solved using sub-tomographic averaging. He then worked as Product Manager at FEI Company (now Thermo Fisher) and introduced solutions for cryo-FIB milling and correlative microscopy. In 2016 he returned to academic research starting his group at Monash University. His research focused on methods and technology development for high resolution in situ cryo-electron microscopy while maintaining an interest in the development of non-linear micro-optics. In 2023, he became director of the Simons Electron Microscopy Center at the New York Structural Biology Center.
