About the Book

Dynamic Behavior of Materials: Fundamentals, Material Models, and Microstructure Effects provides readers with the essential knowledge and tools necessary to determine best practice design, modeling, simulation and application strategies for a variety of materials while also covering the fundamentals of how material properties and behavior are affected by material structure and high strain rates. The book examines the relationships between material microstructure and consequent mechanical properties, enabling the development of materials with improved performance and more effective design of parts and components for high-rate applications. Sections cover the fundamentals of dynamic material behavior, with chapters studying dynamic elasticity and wave propagation, dynamic plasticity of crystalline materials, ductile fracture, brittle fracture, adiabatic heating and strain localization, response to shock loading, various material characterization methods, such as the Hopkinson Bar Technique, the Taylor Impact Experiment, different shock loading experiments, recent advances in dynamic material behavior, the dynamic behaviors of nanocrystalline materials, bulk metallic glasses, additively manufactured materials, ceramics, concrete and concrete-reinforced materials, geomaterials, polymers, composites, and biomaterials, and much more.

Table of Contents:
1 Dynamic elasticity and wave propagation 2 Dynamic plasticity of metals 3 Dynamic ductile fracture 4 Dynamic damage and fracture processes in brittle materials 5 Dynamic shear failure: The underlying physics 6 Shock concepts and material effects 7 The split-Hopkinson (Kolsky) bar technique 8 The Taylor impact experiment 9 High pressure and shock loading experiments 10 Dynamic behavior of high-strength steels for automotive applications 11 Dynamic behavior of metals and alloys designed for high-temperature applications 12 Dynamic behavior of nanocrystalline materials and bulk metallic glasses 13 Dynamic behavior of additively manufactured materials 14 Dynamic behavior of ceramic materials 15 Dynamic behavior of concrete and cementitious materials 16 Dynamic behavior of geomaterials 17 Dynamic behavior of polymers 18 Dynamic behavior of polymer-matrix composite laminates 19 Dynamic behavior of bio-based materials

About the Author :
Professor Hokka is Head of the Engineering Materials Science M.Sc. program at Tempere University in Finland. His research focuses on dynamic behavior of materials, especially the relationship between structure of the material and its dynamic properties and behavior. He leads the multiscale mechanics of materials research group (IMPACT) at Tampere University, has published 80+ publications in international journals, and has been an elected member of the Governing Board of the DYMAT organization since 2016. He was an Associate Technical Editor of the Journal of Dynamic Behavior of Materials from 2016-2018 and also served as guest editor of the same journal in 2019.
