About the Book

Among the most significant developments to have occurred in the UK, over the last ten years, are the changes to the formal structures of industrial relations institutions and practices and the emergence of new forms of employee management. This is the most up-to-date text to examine these new employment relationships and considers how some of the changes have occurred and are implemented in a range of 'non-union' companies. The core of the text centres around the results of an ESRC-sponsored research programme into innovation and change in the 'non-union' firm carried out in the early 1990s. The survey initially involved 100 companies which lead to 30 corporate detailed interviews and 5 in-depth case studies. The considerable influence of US human resource management strategies is reflected in the choice of detailed case studies, two of which are US-owned companies. The text uses the survey to introduce the debate about the future of the non-union firm, locates the US and UK experience in contemporary literature and analysis, and concludes by examining the relationship between non-unionism and human resource management.

Table of Contents:
