About the Book

Privatisation has emerged as one of the most important policy instruments in attempting productive transformation of former state enterprises in transition economies. Privatisation and Structural Change in Transition Economies brings together specialists from different areas (governance, regulation, macro-econometrics, micro-econometrics, enterprise culture, foreign direct investment, technology transfer) to focus on the many different aspects of the privatisation process in transition economies. The book does not dwell on the administrative or procedural aspects of privatisation. Instead it attempts to understand the bigger picture in terms of underlying policy environment and supporting legal and economic measures which helped to a large extent to determine the eventual success or failure of privatisation programmes. The book presents a detailed comparison between the outcome of privatisation successes and failures in Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The comparison is based on the analytical framework on privatisation and corporate governance in transition economies, presenting empirical data on several privatisation programmes and achievements.

Review :
Privatization is at the heart of transition, but we have not recently seen a considered reflection of our learning from the numerous and varied cases across the region. This book goes a long way towards filling that gap. It contains five important theoretical chapters and careful analysis of experiences in five countries. Major themes include de novo entry versus privatization as ways to develop the private sector, privatization methods, corporate governance and the speed of privatization.' - Professor Saul Estrin, London Business School 'This book provides a valuable assessment of the lessons learned about privatisation and structural reform now that more than a decade has passed since the end of Communism in eastern Europe and the USSR. The nuanced analyzes of the methods, speed and sufficiency of privatisation in the five theoretical chapters are complemented by informative case studies of the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Poland, Romania and Serbia.' - Richard Pomfret, Professor of Economics, University of Adelaide, Australia
