Excerpt: ... signs. The city has good streets; the narrow streets are without sidewalks and nearly all are disfigured more or less by the number of telegraph poles and network of wires everywhere. The peculiar stores and lack of counters or seats everywhere, except in the large department stores, received particular notice by the tourists. MITSUKOSHIS DEPARTMENT STORE. We visited this fine store. It is one of the sights of Tokio. A gentlemanly Japanese, dressed in the latest fashion, Prince Albert coat, silk hat, white vest, etc., welcomed us at the entrance and acted as guide, showing us the many departments, speaking perfect English all the time. On the top floor of the store, he turned us over to a Japanese lady. She also spoke good English. There were twenty or more in our party, all of us receiving as much attention as if we were ex-Presidents of the United States. The lady guide led us into a large room, where all were invited to sit down and drink tea, poured out by the daintiest little Japanese girls imaginable. We left this fine store very well pleased and delighted. Also surprised to receive so much polite attention. Several of the tourists offered to tip the attendants who were so kind and polite to us; all refused to accept and looked very much surprised, but not so much as the tourists who had to tip everybody, everywhere. There is in course of erection an addition to the store we have just visited, about 200 by 150 feet--five stories high. A regular steel frame construction, with floor arches, etc. The same in every respect as such buildings are erected in New York, with the difference.
