Howitt. The letters of the pious Mompesson at this period of afflic tion are regarded, and not without justice, as amongst the finest specimens in the English language. That to his children announcing the death of their mother is peculiarly touching, yet couched in such simple language, that it might readily be mistaken for the writing of Oliver Goldsmith. Space will only allow of a short example. We select for this purpose two paragraphs from a letter to his patron, Sir George Saville, written on the 1st of September 1666, when he was in daily expectation of being removed from a sphere of more than ordinary usefulness.
