About the Book

The rapid growth of interest in inclusion chemistry was highlighted recently by the award of the Nobel prize for chemistry to Professors D.J. Cram, J.M. Lehn, and C.J. Pedersen. The principal aim of Inclusion Compounds is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the field of inclusion chemistry. In-depth coverage of subjects has been achieved by inviting the leading international authorities to write on their particular fields of interests; their contributions include detailed descriptions of the design, synthesis, and structure of organic host molecules, molecular recognition and complexation, and host-guest interactions. Previously underdeveloped subjects are given broad coverage, with separate chapters relating to calixarene chemistry and inclusion mechanisms, acyclic diol hosts, cyclophanes, and lariat ethers. Volume 4 is complete in itself as a reference work on organic host molecules. Volume 5 is concerned with inorganic and physical aspects of inclusion phenomena. These books will be of interest and use to all those concerned with the fundamental study of inclusion compounds, as well as those interested in the applications of such complexes in the analytical, biochemical and industrial fields.

Table of Contents:
R. Bishop & I.G. Dance: Design, synthesis, & structure of alicyclic diol hosts; C.D. Gutsche: Calixarene chemistry: An overview; G.D. Andreeti, F. Ugozzoli, R. Ungaro, & A. Pochini: Inclusion of ions & neutral molecules in calixarenes; F. Toda: Inclusion by acetylenic alcohols & some other novel host compounds; E. Weber: Scissor-type hosts: Molecular design & inclusion behaviour; P. Ebmeyer & F. Vogtle: Inclusion behaviour new hosts for molecular recognition & encapsulation of guest compounds; G.W. Gokel: Lariat ethers; T.W. Bell & S. Sahni:Bridged pyridine hosts; H.E. Katz: Recent advances in multidentate anion complexation; I. Goldberg: Structural aspects of organic clathrates in relation to molecular recognition; Y. Murakami, J. Kikuchi, & Y. Hisaeda: Catalytic applications of cyclophanes; Subject index; Author index.

Review :
`this is a highly readable book with a fine index making it particularly useful for reference' S. Harris, Irish Chemical News, Vol. VIII No.1, Spring 1992 `Despite being a multicontributor book, the quality and uniformity of the chapters is unusually high and is nicely supplemented with up-to-date references to the primary literature.' `In all, this book is a valuable overview of a large and rapidly expanding field and serves as a good introduction to and review of the structural chemistry of host-guest systems.' Journal of the American Chemical Society 'Volume 4 in this series, presented in the same style as the first three columes, is a comprehensive survey ... that highlights many of the recent accomplishments in the field with a particular emphasis on structural chemistry. Despite being a multicontributor book, the quality and uniformity of the chapters is unusually high and is nicely supplemented with up-to-date references to the primary literature. This allows for easy reading ... this book is a valuable overview of a large and rapidly expanding field and serves as a good introduction to and review of the structural chemistry of host - guest systems.' Kraig A. Wheeler, University of Texas, Journal of the American Chemistry Society, Vol. 114, No. 21, 1992
