Ww DenslowWilliam Wallace Denslow (1856-1915) was an American illustrator, caricaturist, and children's book author best remembered today as the original illustrator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Denslow trained as acommercial artist and developed a bold, decorative style marked by strong outlines, whimsical humor, and richly patterned detail. His artwork was particularly well suited to the golden age of illustrated children's books at the turn of the twentieth century.Denslow's career reached its peak through his collaboration with author L. Frank Baum. Their partnership produced Father Goose: His Book (1899), which became the best-selling American children's book of that year, and the following year's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a landmark in American children's literature.
