Wang Xi
Dr Wang Xi received his B.A degree from Wuhan Normal College in 1981. He graduated from the Law School of Wuhan University in 1984 (M.L.) and the Law School of Washington University at St. Louis, USA in 1987 (M.J.S.). He concluded his Ph.D. at theLaw School of Wuhan University in 2000.
Dr Wang Xi is the Director of Environmental and Resources Law Institute (ERLI), Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is a member of the National Academic Committee on Environmental and Resources Law, National Key Institution in Humane and Social Science Research, the Education Ministry of the People's Republic of China (PRC). He is a Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Environment and Resources Law. He is a Counsellor of the Municipal Government of Shanghai.
Dr Wang Xi is a leading environmental law scholar in China. He has an extensive career as a law professor in China and abroad. He has been invited as Senior Guest Professor (Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands, 1999), Parson's Visiting Lecturer (Australian Centre for Environmental Law, University of Sydney, Australia), Visiting Professor (University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and Leibniz University of Hanover, Hanover, Germany) amongst others.
Dr Wang Xi is a member of the Commission on Environmental Law, IUCN - The World Conservation Union. He has actively worked with the commission and the Centre for Environmental Law of IUCN since 1993. He was appointed as a member of the IUCN Delegation to the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002. He was a Co-Coordinator for the Inauguration Ceremony of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law and its first Colloquium held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003. He is a member of the Governing Board of the Academy. He is a Board member of the International Council on Environmental Law (Germany).
Dr Wang Xi is active in publishing activities which include being a Co-Chief Editor (from 2007 up to now) and a Reporter of the Yearbook of International Environmental Law (from 1995 up to now), Oxford University Press. He serves as a member of the Editorial Committees for the Journal of Asian Pacific Environmental Law and the Mac quarie Journal of International and Comparative Environmental Law, Australia, and a member of the Editorial Committee of Brazilian Journal of Environmental Law.
Dr Wang, Xi's major publications include 'International Environmental Law' (State University Textbook, Law Press Beijing, 1998, 2005), 'Introduction to American Environmental Law' (Wuhan University Press, 1992, Hanxing Publishing House, Taiwan, 1995). He is the Chief Editor of the book series entitled International and Comparative Environmental Law Review, which has been published three volumes since 2002. He has written many academic articles which have been published in journals in China and overseas. He has served as a speaker and panellist at many national and international conferences.
The research projects he directed cover legal issues on climate change, wetlands, nature reserves, renewable energy, water resources, and solid wastes, granted by the EU-China Higher Education Exchange Program, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Chinese Social Science Fund, Shanghai Municipal Government, etc., respectively. He has been a consultant of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to review and provide comments to the Draft UNDP Monograph on Environmental Law Capacity Building (1994) and a consultant of United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) to draft and review the UNEP Guidelines on Compensation for Environmental Damage. He serves as a consultant of the NPC (Environment and Resources Committee) for the drafting and amending of a number of important national environmental statutes. He has been a consultant of the Asia Development Bank and the World Bank for a number of environmental projects in China, such as projects of Basin-wide Water Resources Management, Yellow River Law, Nature Reserves Law, and Urban Environment Management.
