Volker BraunVolker Braun was born in 1939 in Dresden. He grew up in the German Democratic Republic, studying philosophy in Leipzig and working at the Berliner Ensemble and the Deutsches Theater Berlin. Although he was a member of the SED, his writings were oftencritical of life in the GDR. He won the Lessing Prize in 1981, and the East German National Prize in 1988.
