His scientific standing has been recognized by national and international science academies and he is elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Science, the National Academy of Sciences India & the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He has also been elected to Fellowship of the European Academy of Science, Arts & Humanities, Paris and The World Academy of Science (TWAS), Trieste. In the arena of international agricultural research, Chopra was member of the Research Council of the CGIAR and on the Boards of Trustees of IRRI, ICRISAT and CIMMYT. Chopra has held key positions in the Govt. of India including that of Secretary (DARE) & Director General, ICAR and Member, Planning Commission. Currently, he is Chancellor of the Central University of Kerala and Chairs the Science Advisory Committee to the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.
