Following his graduation in 1991 from the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University, Tyler honed his skills under the tutelage of some of New York's finestches, including Charlie Palmer at Aureole and Rick Laakonenat River Cafe. He became executive chef at Ciboin 1995, and in 1998 opened the acclaimed Cafeteria in Manhattan.
