Schmitz won the Sydney Theatre Company's Patrick White Playwrights' Award (2002) withhis play Lucky and the Australian National Playwrights' Centre/New Dramatists Award (2004) for Chicks Will Dig You! which was performed as part of Company B's 2003 B Sharp season. His other plays include This Blasted Earth (written with Travis Cotton and Tim Minchin), Pan, Cunt Pi, fifteen and then some and Grazing the Phosphorus, commissioned by the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
