Ted Bowman

Ted Bowman grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the middle son of his family. After college and seminary, he worked in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and both Winston-Salem and Charlotte, North Carolina before moving to Minnesota in 1977.

He has been a grief and family educator for over 50 years as a frequent trainer, consultant, and speaker with many groups throughout Minnesota, the United States, and other countries. Ted was an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota (Family Education) 1981-2012; at the University of Saint Thomas (Social Work) 2006-2019; and at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities 1989-1996.

Ted is the author of more than 125 articles and chapters appearing in books, journals, newspapers, and magazines. His booklets, Loss of Dreams: A Special Kind of Grief, and Finding Hope When Dreams Have Shattered are widely used in grief care. Crossroads: Stories at the Intersections was published in 2008. He and Elizabeth Johnson co-edited The Wind Blows, the Ice Breaks (2010), a volume of poems by Minnesota poets addressing themes of loss and renewal. He and Betsy Brown co-edited It Starts with Hope (2016), a book of writing and images of hope to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Center for Victims of Torture. Ambiguous Parables: Poems and Prose of Loss and Renewal was published in November of 2021.

Ted is the father and stepfather of four children and a grandfather of five "grand" children, four alive and one dead but alive in memory and love. His wife, Marge, died in July 2020.
