Samuel Thompson

Samuel Thompson was born in Belfast into a working-class community where, growing up, he witnessed the beginning and the worst years of the Troubles. In 1979 at the age of eighteen he joined the Royal Uster Constabulary, serving in Belfast, Counties Armagh and Tyrone. He witnessed at first hand numerous killings and bombings and lost colleagues and friends to the conflict. He took early retirement in 2008 and in addition to working for an investment agency, took time out to care for his elderly parents. He has lectured on history, including World War II. His debut novel, Nights in Armour, was published in 1993, sponsored by Nobel Peace Prize winner, the late Lord Trimble. It was reprinted by Mercier Press in 2019.
