Robert McKenna A sailor from his boyhood on Long Island Sound, Robert McKenna graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1985 with a degree in History/Government. He spent five years as an engineer and deck officer aboard 378-foot CG cutters, and in 1986 was a wtch officer aboard CG Dallas as it served as on-scene command shop for space shuttle Challenger recovery operations. McKenna left the USCG in 1990 to work as a maritime reporter in Washington D.C. for the trade newsletter CIB Daily. In 1992 he earned a master's Degree from George Mason in International Transactions with a concentration on global maritime matters. In late 1992 he was hired as founding editor of Professional Mariner magazine, also serving as an associate editor for sister publication Ocean Navigator and a crewman aboard the magazine's 90-foot schooner Ocean Star, where he taught navigation seminars.
