Robert E Lee

Robert E LeeRobert Edward Lee Jr. was the sixth of seven children born to Robert Edward Lee and Mary Anna Custis Lee. He spent his early years in Arlington, Virginia, growing up in a family deeply influenced by military tradition and social prominence. During th American Civil War, he followed the path of service, becoming a soldier and experiencing firsthand the conflicts that shaped his generation. After the war, he transitioned to civilian life, establishing himself as a planter and businessman while also pursuing writing, documenting personal experiences and reflections. He married twice, first to Charlotte Haxall and later to Juliet Carter, and fathered children including Anne Carter Lee and Mary Custis Lee. His upbringing and family connections, including lineage tracing back to John Parke Custis and Eleanor Calvert, provided a backdrop of historical significance and social responsibility that influenced his later work. Through his writings and personal endeavors, he contributed to preserving the legacy of his father while offering insight into the social, economic, and familial dimensions of life in postwar Virginia.
