Robert A Sedler

Robert A. Sedler (born September 11, 1935) is Distinguished Professor of Law at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, where he teaches the courses in Constitutional Law and Conflict of Laws (Private International Law). Prior to coming o Wayne State University in 1977, he was Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky. He has also held permanent or visiting appointments at the law schools of Cornell, Washington University of St. Louis, the University of Iowa, the National University of Ethiopia, and Saint Louis University. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956, and his Juris Doctor degree from the same institution in 1959. Professor Sedler has published extensively in Constitutional Law and in Conflict of Laws. He is the author of four books, numerous articles in legal periodicals, chapters in books, and other writings.

In addition to being a law professor and academic commentator, Professor Sedler is an active constitutional lawyer. He has litigated a large number of constitutional cases, including two cases in which he appeared before the Supreme Court of the United States. He has also testified on constitutional issues before committees of the United States Congress. Professor Sedler is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Coif. He was named a Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellow at Wayne State for 1985-1987 and received the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1988. From 2000-2005, he held the Gibbs Chair in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. In 2005, he was elected to the Wayne State University Academy of Scholars, an organization comprised of the University's leading scholars. Election to the Academy is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a faculty member at Wayne State University. Professor Sedler served as the President of the Academy during the 2007-2008 academic year.
