Peter Robertson

Peter Robertson was born in Hamilton, Victoria.

He began drawing in his youth and quickly discovered he was good at it.

In 1975, as a rebellious teen, his unarticulated protest against family conflict and the banality of suburbia foundan outlet by joining a sharpie gang.

At 19 in 1979, leaving the suburbs and the gang behind, he moved into inner city Melbourne, starting a new life, going to art school and beginning a mediocre modelling career.

In 1980, Robertson travelled to Singapore and was signed to a modelling agency and became a short-lived minor celebrity in a very small city-state.

It was in Hong Kong, walking the streets alone and disenchanted, that he made the life decision to become an artist.

In 1981 he moved back to Australia, choosing to live in Sydney, and began painting, drawing and photography. He has been making art and exhibiting ever since.

Peter Robertson has staged exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art and the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney and Gertrude Contemporary and the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne. He has been a finalist in The Archibald Prize, winning the Packing Room Prize in 1994.

Writing has always been a part of his practise, in tandem with art, and in the last ten years he has been drawn to fiction. He has written four novels.

Robertson has been in a relationship with Teresa Liano for 35 years. They live in Melbourne, Victoria and have one adult child.
