He was born into a family of planespotters: during World War Two one grandfather was an anti-aircraft gunner, the other an ARP warden during the Blitz. His father was an intercept rada operator in the RAF. He was in the Air Training Corps and reached the heady heights of becoming champion in Aircraft Recognition in 1982 (Scottish and Northern Ireland area).
