Mohamed Choukri
Mohamed Choukri (1935–2003) is one of North Africa's most celebrated and provocative authors. Born into poverty in rural Morocco, he overcame immense adversity, teaching himself to read and write classical Arabic at age twenty. Choukri’s oeuvre isrenowned for its unflinching portrayal of marginalised lives, shining a light on people and spaces ignored by Moroccan society. His vivid storytelling, rooted in the streets of Tangier, serves as both a literary protest and a celebration of resilience. His publications include For Bread Alone and Streetwise (both with Telegram).
