He served in the U.S. Navy from 1989 to 1993, with assignments to USS Orion (AS-18) and the Port Services Department of Commander, Submarine Squadron 22 in La Maddalena, Sardinia as wellas Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron TWO (VQ-2) in Rota, Spain. His interest in the Second World War dates back to 1978.
