Mark SmileyMark Smiley is a Minnesota native, having been born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, in 1953. He grew up in the small town of Savage, Minnesota, where he attended St. John's Catholic School. He was a high school athlete, playing football and baseball. It wasduring his adolescent years that he took up the hobbies of hunting and fishing. He graduated from Burnsville High School in 1972. He was attracted to a vocation that involved working with metals, so he enrolled in Dunwoody Institute in 1974 and earned a diploma in 1976. He was a member of the football team at the University of Minnesota. He was involved in the welding trade. In 1989, Mark moved to International Falls, Minnesota, to work for Boise Cascade, a paper mill. After two years, he transferred to Marshall, Minnesota, where he was a pipewelder at an ethanol plant. In 1996, he moved to Mankato, Minnesota, to work for Arthur Daniels Midland. In 2000, he injured his hand and entered into a rehabilitation program, so he was unable to work. In 2001, he moved to Cleveland, Minnesota, and worked as a farm technician. He entered into the building trades in 2005. In 2006, he became a small business owner and currently operates Smiley Cup Coffee Drive-Through in Mankato, Minnesota. Mark has one grown son, Jerrod. Mark remains close to his family.
