Malcolm K MarksMalcolm Marks is now retired after a marvelous career that stretched from 1979 through to 2019. Apart from four or five years (in the career wilderness) when he worked in the UK as a teacher, his entire post-university life has been spent working in nd with Africa and Asia. These were remarkable, eye-opening years for him as he learnt from the diverse cultures, individuals and characters who welcomed him to their countries, towns and villages. His seven years of tertiary education were all completed at Queen Mary College, University of London where firstly he gained an upper second in plant biology and then went on to earn a PhD in ecology. He considers that there were three turning points in his life that led him eventually to take his selected career and life path. The first was a decision made by his forward-looking parents when he was only eleven years old to accept a bursary for him to obtain a free place at a public (= private in the UK) school in the village of Sutton Valence in Kent. This opened his countrymouse eyes to a whole new world of leadership, attitude and privilege. The second was being persuaded by his closest university friend to travel across London to attend a disco where he met his future wife and soulmate Véronique. The third turning point was to accept a small consulting mission to the Republic of Chad in 1987 where a serious of coincidences conspired to change the direction of his career.Malcolm and Veronique have been married since 1977, they have two lovely children and two beautiful grandchildren and live a very full retired life in the beautiful Bugey region of southeast France.
