K C JayaramDr. K.C. Jayaram D.Sc., F.N. A. Sc., F.Z.S.I. has been engaged in freshwater fish taxonomic studies and zoogeography for well over 50 years. He has covered many river systems as the Cauvery, Krishna and Mahanadi mainly to investigate the fish fauna. e is often consulted by many ichthyologists both in India and abroad in respect of the fish taxonomy of the Indian region. His specialization is on the Catfishes and he is one of few authorities world over in respect of this group of fishes. He served in the Zoological Survey of India and retired as Joint Director. After retirement he was entrusted with the task of monitoring the Cauvery River system in its entirety for its ecology, pollution aspects besides floristic and faunistic composition. Thisreport was published by the Madras Science Foundation, Chennai. He was awarded the prestigious Pitambar National Environment Fellowship by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India, New Delhi, under the aegis of which he studied the Deccan Mahseer fishes and their threat percepts. This monograph with guidelines for determining the threatened categories of fishes is under publication. His book on The Freshwater fishes of the Indian region, published by the same publishers, is another comprehensive contribution covering all the known freshwater fishes of the region. This book has received wide acclaim and is used extensively as evidenced by its being referred to and quoted by most workers on freshwater fish taxonomy.
