Born in Cuba and raised in Panama and Puerto Rico, he previously served as acting dean of the College of Social Sciences and prfessor of anthropology at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras (UPR). He also served as chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and director of the journal Revista de Ciencias Sociales at UPR.
