John Henry PattersonJohn Henry Patterson (1867-1947) was an Irish-born soldier, engineer, and author best known for his role in the construction of the Uganda Railway in British East Africa and for his famous encounters with the man-eating lions of Tsavo. Trained as an ngineer in the British Army, Patterson was sent to East Africa in 1898 to supervise the building of a railway bridge across the Tsavo River. During the project he successfully hunted the two lions responsible for numerous attacks on railway workers, an episode he later chronicled in The Man-Eaters of Tsavo.
