John G. Browning

John G. Browning has been a partner in the Texas offices of several large national law firms, in addition to managing his own law firm. He is licensed in Texas and Oklahoma and handles civil litigation in state and federal courts, in areas rangingfrom employment and intellectual property to commercial cases and defense of products liability, professional liability, media law, and general negligence matters. He also served as a Justice on Texas’ Fifth Court of Appeals. Justice Browning has thirty-two years of trial and appellate experience. He received his Bachelor of Arts with general and departmental honors from Rutgers University in 1986, where he was a National Merit Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law in 1989.

He is the author of two previous books on social media and the law: The Lawyer’s Guide to Social Networking: Understanding Social Media’s Impact on the Law (West 2010) and the Social Media and Litigation Practice Guide (West 2014). Justice Browning is also a contributing author to ten other books, the author of over forty-five published law review articles, as well as numerous articles for regional and national legal publications. His work has been cited in over 400 law review articles, in practice guides in eleven states, and by courts in New York, Texas, California, Maryland, Tennessee, Illinois, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Florida. He has been quoted as a leading authority on social media and the law by such publications as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Law 360, Time, the National Law Journal, the ABA Journal, WIRED, and Inside Counsel. His work has been recognized with four Burton Awards for Distinguished Achievement in Legal Writing, the Texas Bar Foundation’s Outstanding Law Review Article Award, the DRI’s G. Duffield Smith Outstanding Publication Award, and the State Bar of Texas Presidents’ Certificate of Merit, among other accolades.

Justice Browning currently serves as Distinguished Jurist in Residence and Professor of Law at Faulkner University’s Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. He also serves as Chair of the Institute for Law and Technology at The Center for American and International Law. He is a past Chair of the Computer and Technology Section of the State Bar of Texas. A former member of the Professional Ethics Committee of the State Bar of Texas, Justice Browning has received the highest honors for ethics and professionalism that a Texas lawyer can receive, the Lola Wright Foundation Award from the Texas Bar Foundation, the Jim Bowman Professionalism Award from the State Bar College, and the Luther “Luke” Soules Award from the State Bar of Texas Litigation Section. He is a frequent speaker on legal ethics at Continuing Legal Education seminars and legal symposia all over the country.
