James Legge James Legge (1815-1897) was a Scottish missionary, linguist, and sinologist who was an expert in classical Chinese. He received his education at King’s College, Aberdeen, and Highbury Theological College. He was elected a fellow of Corpus Christi Colege, Oxford, in 1875 and assumed the Chair of Chinese Language and Literature at Oxford University. He translated and authored books such as Chinese Classics: With a Translation, Critical and Exegetical Notes, Prolegomena, and Copious Indexes (5 vols.), The Religions of China: Confucianism and Taoism Described and Compared with Christianity, The Nestorian Monument of Hsî-an Fû in Shen-hsî, China, and others.
