Behr Professor of History at Claremont McKenna College in California, studies the political, religious and intellectual history of modern Russia from 1500 to the present. His major publications include Boris hicherin and Early Russian Liberalism (1828 - 1866) (Stanford University Press, 1992), plus twelve other books and edited volumes. With Semion Lyandres, Hamburg is founding co-editor of Journal of Modern Russian History and Historiography (Brill), now in its seventeenth year.
