She never thought she would survive to age 21. A childhood catastrophe, Hurricane Carol, destroyed prospects of sanctuary from Stalinist parents with extended family who perished in the storm. The events of 9/11 accelerated Deplorabella's alienation from the last vestiges of communist upbringing as illusions imploded. Liberty, faith, and appreciation for all the true joys of living took center stage, and she carries them with her wherever she goes. Deplorabella recalibrated the balance between despair and hope, failures and achievements, to quit the darkness for the light.
