Being born in 1959, when the largest companies were family-owned and operated, my childhood was one of the best times in American histor. My parents made it back into the middle class after losing everything in a bankruptcy. We had clean food, clean water (except for the fluoride), and clean air. I was employed in my parents' moving and storage company till the age of twenty-one. Was asked to leave home at nineteen. In 1979, I moved into an apartment with a black man. I mention this because I was blessed to have been raised in a home where a man was a man, not judged by the color of his skin. When Wayne Lidsey proposed it was time to move out of my parents' home, and stated we could rent a two-bedroom, I said yes. Not even realizing at the time that we were not supposed to do such a thing. I went to work for a United VanLines franchise at twenty-one years old. I, like most of the people I have known, had a job that paid enough to afford a place to share, and actually saved money along the way. I have strived to be a good citizen, advancing in my profession, doing well for those I interact with, and at the peak of my career, ran, with a partner, a two-office real estate company. What I did not see coming was the every 70-80-year economic depression. In which I lost everything I worked twenty-eight years to build. This caused me to stop and think: How could this happen? Why didn't I see it coming? How am I going to make good on this? And then a political door knocker knocked on my door, and I had a candid conversation with him. He, too, was taken unfair advantage of by being sold the idea that a college degree will open doors for you. Here he was door-knocking for $10.00 per hour, part-time, wondering the same things I was at the age of 52 years old.
