Before retirement, he was Bishop of St Albans and sat in the House of Lords. He has an MPhil and PhD from the University ofLeicester, plus two honorary doctorates, and is an Honorary Citizen of Fano, Italy. Currently, he is a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey.
