In one scene, a high school cross-county track coach surprises his team with a detour to the ocean after winning a major track meet. The coach did not have the fee for the national park. However, the park ranger waived the fee after hearing that not one of the members of his team had ever seen the ocean. The joy of watching the young actors as they experienced the ocean was heartwarming and thought provoking. I began thinking about my childhood experiences with the natural world and those of children with experiences limited by geography, time, or means and the seed of the book was planted.
