Bernard Steunenberg
Bernard Steunenberg is Professor Emeritus at Leiden University. He has published extensively on various aspects of European integration. His research focuses on legislative and executive policymaking, including the trnsposition and implementation of EU policy in the national context, in areas such as the posting of workers, environmental policy, and state aid. His work draws on insights from game theory and the economic approach to politics, as well as the role of discourse in policymaking and political processes.
Research-based insights are reflected in his teaching, which is directed not only at university students but also at broader audiences interested in EU politics and policy. An example is the well-attended massive open online course on EU policymaking that he launched in 2016, which remains available and provides an accessible introduction to the functioning of the EU.
He is currently conducting research on policy implementation and EU enlargement policy.
