He is the fourth son of London lawyer James Kitson, Esq., and the cousin of Sir James Kitson, Baroet. Arthur Kitson received his education from private tutors and at King's College, London, where he won the Whitworth scholarship in a difficult examination, finishing second out of 600 competitors. He moved to the United States after finishing college and was hired by the Baldwin Locomotive Company of Philadelphia. On March 25, 1886, he married Fannie Ernestina Aschenbach in Spring Garden, Philadelphia. They had seven children before divorcing.
