Ross served with the Blantyre Synod of the CCAP in Malawi from 1958 until 1965 when he was deported from the country owing to his close association with the "rebel" ministers Masauko Chipembere and Yatuta Chisiza. On returning to Edinburgh e completed his Ph.D. and began his distinguished career as Lecturer in the History of Missions in the Faculty of Divinity.
