Alf Dubs

Alf Dubs is one of the most notable figures in the current House of Lords, respected by colleagues from across the political spectrum. He came to the UK at the age of six on the Kindertransport, fleeing Nazi persecution in Czechoslovakia, and arried at Liverpool Street station in June 1939. MP for Battersea South and then Battersea from 1979-1987, Alf was also Director of the Refugee Council for seven years before becoming a Labour life peer in 1995. He served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1997-1999, at the time the Good Friday Agreement.

He has been a tireless advocate for refugee rights throughout his career, steering the Dubs' Amendment on unaccompanied child refugees through Parliament in 2016, and today he continues to campaign on issues as diverse as human rights, integrated education in Northern Ireland, closer relations with the EU, and House of Lords reform.
