Educated in philosophy, he began his career as a fellow n moral philosophy at the University of Edinburgh and later became an assistant lecturer at Victoria University of Manchester. Lindsay served as Master of Balliol College, Oxford, and was deeply engaged in both educational reform and political thought. During his career, he was known for advocating the expansion of higher education and promoting broader access to learning. In recognition of his contributions, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and elevated to the peerage.
