About the Book

This Proceedings volume contains the papers that were presented at the Second International Symposium on the Structure and Functioning of Plant Populations held in Wageningen, The Netherlands, in May 1984. It was also the second congress of the International Society of Plant Biologists. This is the second in a series, the aim of which is to bring together existing knowledge of the demography, population genetics and ecophysiology of plants and to stimulate a multidisciplinary approach to the population biology of plants. Special attention has been given in this book to the phenotypic and genotypic variations within and between plant populations.

Table of Contents:
Phenotypic Variation and Implications for Reproductive Success (P.A. Werner). Ecophysiological Adaptation, Plastic Responses, and Genetic Variation of Annuals, Biennials and Perennials in Woodland Clearings (J. van Andel and W.H.O. Ernst). Comparison of Dactylis Glomerata and Bromus Erectus Populations from Contrasted Successional Stages (J. Roy). Differences in Population Biology Within the Lathyrus Sylvestris Group (Leguminosae: Papilioanacae) (M. Hossaert and M. Valero). Seed Dimorphism For Dispersal: Theory and Implications (I. Olivieri and P.-H. Gouyon). Temporal and Spatial Dynamics in Populations of Biennial Plants (E. van der Meijden et al.). Life-History Variation and the Demography of Plant Populations (A.R. Watkinson and C.C. Gibson). Phenotypic Variation of Rhinanthus Augustifolius C.C. Gmelin in a Succession Series (E. de Hullu). Aspects of the Ecological Genetics of Pasture Species (R.W. Snaydon). Measuring the Effects of Genetic Variation of Plant Fitness (R.A. Ennos). Interactions Between White Clover and Perennial Ryegrass in an Old Permanent Pasture (C. Gliddon and P. Trathan). Cohort Behaviour and Environmental Determination of Life Histories Within a Natural Population of Plantago Coronopus L. (M.J. Hutchings and S. Waite). Phenotypic Plasticity and Genetic Differentiation of Demographic Characteristics in Some Plantago Species (C.W.P.M. Blom and L.A.P. Lotz). Genetic Differentiation for Physiological and Morphological Traits in Plantago Lanceolata L. and Plantago Major L. (H. Lambers, D. Kuiper and J. van der Toorn). The Significance of Genetic Variations in Plants as Illustrated by Plantago Populations (W. van Delden). Why are So Many Plantago Species Gynodioecious? (J.M.M. van Damme). Pollen Flow Patterns and the Creation of Local Genotypic Variation (S.N. Handel). Ecological Genetics of Breakdown in Tristyly (S.C.H. Barrett). Maintenance of a Polymorphism for Outcrossing Frequency in a Predominantly Selfing Plant (R.J. Abbott). The Interaction Between Phenotypic Diversity and Mating Patterns in Plant Populations (M.T. Clegg, D.J. Schoen and B.K. Epperson). Selfish Cytoplasm and Adaptation: Variations in the Reproductive System of Thyme (P.H. Gouyon and D. Couvet). Genetic Variation in Plant Populations: From Demography to DNA (B.A. Schaal). Phenotypic and Genotypic Variation Within and Between Populations of the Polyploid Complex, Dactylis Glomerata L. (R. Lumaret). Effects of Heavy-Metal Stress on the Genetic Structure of Populations of Silene Cucubalus (J.A.C. Verkleij, W.B. Bast-Cramer and H. Levering).
