About the Book

For over 50 years this textbook has been one of the standard reference works for the student and practising engineer in the motor industry. This edition has been extensively revised with much new material. The well-established plan remains, and it aims to provide a clear and simple approach to all subjects from elementary principles up to the most advanced design technology. Parts 2 and 3 have been extended and revised to cover recent developments, including those in piston and ring design, carburettors, crankshaft design and materials, and petrol injection. The section devoted to emissions has been rewritten and a new section has been added on catalytic conversion. Two unit-injection systems, Cummins and GM now feature in the chapter on diesel injection. Details of both petrol and diesel engine design are discussed and a section has been added on the Stirling engine. There have also been revisions to Part 4 which now includes discussion of traction-control differentials, four-wheel drive, anti-locking and regenerative braking. A number of other advances are covered such as suspension, springing and gearbox design. The latter includes details on the multi-speed splitter principle and the Maxwell and Ricardo ALT automatic transmissions for buses and cars respectively.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Fundamentals: some fundamental principles of mechanics. Part 2 The engine: general principles of heat engines; engine balance; construction details of the engine; six-, eight- and twelve-cylinder engines; sleeve-valve and special engines; the compression-ignition engine; the two-stroke engine; carburation; carburettors in practice; emission control; fuel supply - air cleaning; supercharging and superchargers; fuels for automobile engines; lubrication; engine cooling potential for future development; bearings, gearing, chain and belt drives. Part 3 Transmission: transmission requirements; clutches; why is a gearbox necessary?; constructional arrangements of gearboxes; epicyclic and pre-selector gearboxes; torque convertors and automatic gearboxes; universal joints, driving steered wheels and alternative drive systems; the differential; the back axle; axle constructions; the double-reduction axle. Part 4 The carriage unit: the basic structure; brakes; servo- and power-operated and regenerative braking systems; front axle and steering mechanism; suspension principles; suspension systems; six-wheel vehicles.
