About the Book

The crisis of confidence in schooling has pushed education to the top of the political agenda in the UK. The crisis has extended to higher education because of the low level of access relative to that of other European countries. There is also the lack of a national organization to promote "education at work" as a way of improving the quality of individual productive lives. Each of these problems is contributing to our present anxiety that the economic and cultural foundations of our society are declining. In this book, the author presents an account of her own education at work. It aims to encourage practitioners to have faith in their own creative powers and to understand education from the point of view of making sense of their own practice, while exercising their critical powers in evaluating the contributions of other thinkers to this understanding. From the author of "Action Research: Principles and Practice".

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Experience a problem when some of my educational values are denied in my practice: the professional education of teachers; the problem of educational knowledge. Part 2 Imagine a solution to the problem: the notion of a living educational theory; the educational enterprise; towards an educational epistemology of practice. Part 3 I act in the direction of the solution: the answer of Avon; action research for groups of schools; whole-school development. Part 4 I evaluate the imagined solutions: evaluating practice; evaluating support practices; evaluating provision for continuing teacher education. Part 5 I modify my ideas and practices in light of the evaluation: perspectoves on practice; education and the society of tomorrow.
