About the Book

This book includes specialized areas of interaction problems of fluid with a variety of structures encountered by the flow ranging from wind, current, biofluids and ocean waves to tall buildings, ocean structures, cables, towers, bridges, risers and biological structures. It emphasizes new research that advances the interaction problem and latest work in the specialized field of fluid structure interaction. It also presents new applications of this development to real world problems. The basic mathematical formulations of fluid structure interaction and their special numerical (as well as physical) modelling of the interaction problems are also discussed. The numerical methods deal with problems where the position of the borders or interphase boundaries are determined as part of the solution. The transient cases lead to the so-called moving boundary problems, and the steady state case to the free boundary problems. With papers from the fourth conference in the successful series of "Fluid Structure Interaction", the following topics are included in the book: hydrodynamic forces, offshore structure and ship dynamics, offshore engineering, response of structures including fluid dynamics, computational methods, experimental studies and validation, flow induced vibrations, moving boundary problems and acoustics and noise.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Hydrodynamic forces Steady wave drift force on basic objects of symmetry; The effect of radiation velocity potentials on the drift force on a submerged sphere; Evaluation of hydrodynamic effects on elevated cone-shaped water tanks Section 2: Offshore structure and ship dynamics Comparison of three probability models for offshore structural response due to Morison wave loading; Economizing the stability of rubble-mound breakwaters using artificial neural network Section 3: Offshore engineering Numerical modelling of disconnectable turret mooring systems; Response of free standing flexible cylinders to waves; Development of SCR VIV in a changing flow field; Technology for offshore wind turbines Section 4: Response of structures including fluid dynamics Analysis of dam-reservoir interaction by employing the modified-efficient fluid hyper element; Coupling between beam-type vibration and oval-type vibration of a cylindrical water storage tank; Simulation of wave propagation in flexible hoses Section 5: Computational methods Numerical solution of compressible fluid flow in porous media with boundary element method; Application of Pseudo-Symmetric technique for seismic analysis of concrete arch dams; Hydroelastic vibration of a rectangular perforated plate with a simply supported boundary condition; Structural optimization of a small aircraft wing from aeroelastic responses; Numerical simulation of wind effects on an airport air traffic control tower; Instability of an elliptical flow: weakly nonlinear analysis Section 6: Experimental studies and validation Fluid structure around a tilted rectangular cylinder near a solid wall and induced loading; Aerodynamic continual weft brake; Downstream hydraulic geometry for incised channel; Use of prestressed concrete cylinder pipes as composite breakwaters: implementation criterion Section 7: Flow induced vibrations Hybrid analysis method using CFD and analytical solutions on fluid elastic vibration of circular cylinder arrays; Fluid-structure coupling analysis and simulation of a slender structure; An experimental investigation of collapsible tube flows at the onset of self excited oscillations Section 8: Moving boundary problems Fluid flow and pressure effects in phase-field models for solidification; Numerical modelling of gas-solid interface for homogeneous propellant combustion; Numerical and theoretical analysis of shock waves interaction and reflection Section 9: Acoustics and noise Fast multipole boundary element method for the simulation of acoustic-structure interaction; Self-excitation analyses of vocal chord under breathing flow and frequency change by muscle activation; Interaction between main line standing waves and side branch resonance frequencies
